USS Chilton (APA-38) was a Bayfield-class attack transport ship in the United States Navy during World War II. It was named after Chilton County in Alabama, and commissioned in November 1942. The ship participated in numerous operations during the war, including the invasions of the Marshall Islands, Marianas, and Okinawa. It also took part in the occupation of Japan after the surrender in 1945.
After the war, USS Chilton was used to transport troops and personnel during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. It was decommissioned in 1970 and sold for scrap in 1973. The ship was awarded numerous medals and accolades for its service during World War II, including the Navy Occupation Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Today, the USS Chilton is remembered as an instrumental part of American history and the fight for freedom.
